Day 4 en Italia!

This morning we met Viviana in the local square and caught our charter bus to the small town of Tivoli in the outskirts of eastern Rome.  The ancient ruins of Hadrians Villa are located on a small hill just down from the town.  Francesco arrived on his scooter and toured this spectacular site with us; he shared much about the history and the fascinating architectural techniques that the Romans implemented in the creation of this extraordinary complex.  Many of the villa’s individual structures were recreations that were inspired by Emperor Hadrian’s travels through the empire.

Next, as Leah and Ann so eloquently put it, “We visited the most magical place on Earth…that isn’t Disney.”  Villa D’este. Built by the Cardinal D’este in the 1600s, it is considered to be the epitome of Italian gardens and the finest in the world.  At the time of its construction, it costs were nearly 1 million Euros.  The use of complex fountains and intricate plantings made this the best garden destination of our trip so far!  Enjoy a few of our pics from this amazing place...
